Twelve racks.Zero treadmills.

Eisenlager is a barbell gym. Squat, bench, deadlift — calibrated plates, competition platforms, coaches who referee at the weekend. There is nothing else in the building, and that is the point.

The floor

A parts warehouse with the shelves taken out.

We took over 1,400 square metres of a former parts store on the Kronsberg industrial strip in 2016, pulled out the racking, poured a slab that takes a dropped deadlift, and bolted twelve power racks to it in one straight line.

Everything on this floor exists to load a barbell. The hall is loud, the light is hard, the ceiling is high enough that nobody has ever hit it with a press. There are no mirrors on the lifting floor — you get told what your depth looked like by a person, not by a reflection.

The hall

Steel power rack with a loaded bar racked at squat height, chalk handprints on the upright
Loaded barbell with calibrated competition plates on a wooden platform under a tungsten spot
Empty competition platform of birch plywood with painted markings, seen from above
Steel bowl of lifting chalk, a rolled belt and knee sleeves on a worn wooden bench

What is on the floor

  • 4 × competition platform with combo rack, IPF dimensions
  • 2 × deadlift platform, rubber over birch, drop-rated
  • 1 × mechanical monolift for heavy squat singles

Bars

  • 14 × 20 kg power bar, centre knurl, 29 mm
  • 6 × 15 kg power bar, 25 mm, for the lighter classes
  • 4 × bench-press bar, stiff, no whip
  • 3 × deadlift bar, 27 mm, full whip
  • Safety-squat bar, trap bar, football bar, log

Plates and collars

  • 18 × training plate set, loading to 250 kg
  • Change plates from 0.25 kg on every platform

House rules

Eight lines on the wall by the door.

They are stencilled at the entrance in white paint. Nobody has needed a ninth since 2019.

  1. Strip the bar

Plates back on the pegs by size, collars in the bin at the end of the rack. The next lifter should find the bar empty.

  2. Chalk stays in the bowl

Chalk up over the bowl, not over the platform. Broom and dustpan hang on every second upright.

  3. Everybody works in

Ask before you take an occupied rack. Between-set rest is long here — two lifters share a rack without either one waiting.

  4. Fifteen minutes on the platform

When somebody is waiting for a competition platform, fifteen minutes is the limit. Set a timer, then rack it and hand over.

  5. Film the set, not the room

Record your own lift from behind the platform, then step out of the walkway. No calls on the floor — the corridor is right there.

  6. Drop only what should be dropped

A deadlift comes down under control to the knee. Never drop an empty bar, never drop on the training platforms, never drop calibrated plates.

  7. Shoes on

Lifting shoes, flats or socks with grip. Bare feet only on your own platform, and only for deadlifts.

  8. Ask about the commands

If you do not know the start, press and rack commands, ask a coach before you need them in a meet. That is what we are here for.

Platform slots

When a coach is standing behind you.

The hall is open every day. These are the hours when one of the three of us is on the floor with a clipboard, running the platform. Slots are included in the membership — turn up, put your name on the board.

Squat

Ruth Kalkbrenner

Head coach · keeper of the records board

Founded Eisenlager in 2016 after fifteen years of competing in the -76 class. Ruth runs the squat evenings, writes most of the meet-prep blocks and is the only person allowed to change a number on the records board.

  • National referee, category 2
  • Trainer B licence, strength sport
  • Meet director, Kronsberg Open
Portrait of Bogdan Ilić, coach at Eisenlager, standing beside a competition bench
Bench press

Bogdan Ilić

Coach · meet handler

Competes in the -83 class and holds the house bench record he set in 2025. Bogdan runs Tuesday’s bench block, and if you are lifting at a meet he is usually the one shouting your name from behind the barrier.

  • Regional referee, category 1
  • Trainer B licence, strength sport
  • Bench specialist, 15 years under the bar

Deadlift

Meike Söhnholz

Coach · deadlift and beginners

Takes every first session in the building. Meike runs Wednesday’s deadlift evening and the youth slots, and she is the reason most people here can hold a hook grip past the knee.

  • Regional referee, category 1
  • Trainer B licence, strength sport
  • Youth strength-sport coaching certificate
House records

The board by the door.

We do not print testimonials. There is a painted board at the entrance with every house record on it, by weight class, and the same numbers are here. A record goes up when a coach has watched the lift — in this hall or at a meet — and signed it off. Nothing goes up on a phone video.

Two lifts are waiting on the second referee’s signature. They stay grey until then.

What counts

  1. Squat below parallel, on a full command sequence, judged by a licensed referee.
  2. Bench with a visible pause and the start, press and rack commands given.
  3. Deadlift locked out, shoulders back, bar returned under control.
  4. Calibrated plates and a working bar. No slingshot, no wraps above the elbow, no belt over 13 mm.
  5. Two coaches present, or one referee’s card at an affiliated meet.

Programme templates

The plans we hand out, in full.

Every template that gets written on the whiteboard eventually ends up here. Take one, run it, come back with the video. Percentages are of your best single in that lift.

What every new member runs first. Three sessions, the three lifts on all of them, and enough repetition that the set-up stops being a decision.

Week structure

  • Day 1Squat 5×5 @ 70% · Bench 4×6 @ 65% · Rows 4×8
  • Day 2Deadlift 5×3 @ 70% · Bench 5×5 @ 70% · Split squat 3×10
  • Day 3Squat 4×6 @ 65% · Overhead press 4×8 · Chins 4×max

These are training templates, not personal advice. If anything hurts, stop the set and speak to a coach — and to a doctor or physiotherapist, not to us.

Trial session

First session is free, and it is a real one.

You will not be shown around a room of machines. You will warm up, we will watch you squat with an empty bar, and by the end of the hour you will have done all three lifts with something on them. Bring flat shoes and something you can bend in.

We answer within one working day with two times to choose from.
